You didn't say where in San Jose you need to be, but they have an Extended Stay property in Downtown San Jose. Their phone number is 408-453-3000. If it's a company you are going to work for, they might be able to suggest some places, and they may even have discounts at certain properties...

What is your budget? Extended Stay is a good place. Another popular option around here is to rent a room in someone's house. San Jose is a pretty safe city. But there are areas to avoid. Mostly just stay away from East and South San Jose. Otherwise, downtown is good and some areas of North and almost all of West San Jose is good.

When are you looking to be there? When my son was in college, he had a summer internship in the area. He eventually ended up sharing an apartment with some other students, but one of the options that he looked at was staying in a dormitory at one of the colleges in the area. The only constraint was that he could not move in until after the end of the Spring term and had to be out before students arrived for the Fall term.

Check on Craig's list - if the timing is right, you may get to house sit.

As many as you would like to work.

up to 3 hours a day so 21 hours a week

Yeah, I had a tutoring position at my school last year. I worked an hour for 4 days a week on minimum wage.

During the school year, minors aged 16 to 17 generally are limited to 4 hours of work on a school day, 8 hours on a non-school day, between the hours of 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. (or until 12:30 a.m. on a non-school day). When school is out, the limits are 8 hours per day and 48 per week. Also, there is a list of jobs considered hazardous to the health of a minor so a minor is never allowed to be employed in said jobs (i.e. handling dynamite, operation of most heavy equipment, etc.)

You can work 40 hours a week if you are not in school. Other wise if your in school the law protects you from over working so you can get your studies done.
